Hellenistic Art
Measurements: 40 X 54H cm
Code: IG-1159
Hellenic Male Torso in Plaster
The original work was a bronze sculpture by Diodorus, created around 250 BC and is today known only through Roman-era copies. This bust is part of a statue known as Afrodite al Bagno, or Crouching Aphrodite, in which the goddess Aphrodite is crouched and awaits someone to pour water over her back. The original statue from which this bust is derived is located in Rome, at the National Roman Museum in Palazzo Massimo.
Other copies of Afrodite al Bagno, which have reached us without some parts, can be found at the Louvre in Paris and the British Museum in London.
