Plaster Charioteer of Delphi

Greek Art

Measurements: 50 x 29 x 73H cm
Code: IG 1153

475 BC

The statue was discovered in the sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi in 1896 and is one of the few bronze works to have been recovered. Due to the refinement of its details, it is presumed that the author may be the same who created the Riace Bronzes. The Charioteer represents an ideal and victorious beauty for its spiritual greatness rather than physical, worthy of a deity. The gaze is intense and deep, and the facial expression conveys the serenity of the victor.
